Origin of our Class Yin-Yang Logo:
Many years ago Ellie McLean (wife of Ted McLean) sat in the bleachers of Finney Field with Clay and Pinky McEldowney watching her husband, Ted, play Lacrosse. She was a graphicdesigner for Time Magazine so she volunteered to design a logo for the Class of 1969. Those were the days before computers when mechanical designs were drawn by hand and colors added using sheets of acetate overlay. Nowadays this work can be done quickly by using computer programs like Photoshop and others, but not then.
Clay asked Ellie to write a paragraph or two describing her thinking in designing the class logo, which is now used in literally everything having to do with the Princeton Class of ‘69. The idea behind using a version of the yin-yang symbol mostly has to do with the “hippie“ culture of the time, which emphasized peace, harmony and inclusion. Perfect for those two numbers, 6 and 9, which spoon together so delightfully.
Ellie chose an almost Taoist juxtaposition of the 6 and the 9 to reflect the Class of 69’s amalgam of unity and mutual respect, forged in those fiery years before graduation.
And there you have it. Ellie is thrilled to be getting the recognition that she's longed for all these years!
